March 5, 1944 - January 13, 2015

A private family memorial service will be held for Robert "Bob" Applehans, Jr.

Robert Bruce Applehans, Jr. was born March 5, 1944 in Evanston, Illinois to the late Robert Bruce Applehans, Sr. and Francis Henrietta Williamson Applehans.

He had been a resident of Hideaway since 2006, formerly living in Virginia.

He served in the US Army for 20 years, and worked for Computer Services Corp.

after retirement from the military. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, and loved looking at the view of Hideaway Lake.

He was also an avid chef.

Survivors include his three daughters, Kristin McGlaughlin of Hampton, VA, Betsy McLinda and husband, Stewart of Jacksonville, TX, and Allison Lee and husband, Andrew of Williamsburg, VA; two brothers, Stephen Applehans of Illinois and Ken Applehans of Wisconsin; sister, Mary Fousel of Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Shelby, Elizabeth, Liam, Ben, Abby and Drew; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Bob belonged to a recipe group and his family says it was the main reason he woke up every morning.

“A few weeks ago we finished his last cookbook, Hamburger and Hotdogs.
I am sharing it with you all now. Just click on the link below. Enjoy and cook a burger in remembrance of him!”

Most sincerely,
Betsy Applehans McLinda

Bob did not want a funeral or any big fuss made, but he asked that you make donations to the Shriner's Hospital in honor of him and his grandson.

Comments from fellow Troopers

Bob Applehans was the finest Aviation Maintenance Officer AND Service Platoon Leader I had the privilege to serve under in my thirty-year career.  He rescued our Troop from a disastrous situation after we lost Stu Moody and Dick DeRozier, and charted an upward path from there on.  He was always a positive force and supplied what counsel he deemed necessary in such a manner as to encourage rather than detract, and always led by example. I have been very fortunate to have benefited from his advice, counsel, and companionship (and from his culinary expertise) during our retirement years.  I hope to meet him again on Fiddler's Green.  Rest In Peace.

Sincerely,

Lawrence (Larry) E. Starbuck, Aviation Repair Technician (Non-Rated), 1969-70, D Troop, 3rd Squadron, 5th United States Cavalry, CW4, U.S. Army (Retired)
