A
Skull Story
The
Skull was an object from which we were required to drink a wild variety
of alcohol as a rite of acceptance into Lighthorse Cav.
The tale was that it had belonged to some VC KIA from an early
Lighthorse victory.
About the middle of my 1969-70 tour, (and yes, I went through the
full ceremony and drank the "Cocktail" provided), the Skull was
separating into its various skeletal plates, if that is the proper
terminology, and I, being the Lighthorse Maintenance Warrant, was
requested to repair it. (It had deteriorated to the point of no longer
retaining the various alcoholic goodies it was supposed to hold...)
We had, in the Army's maintenance system at the time, something
called a "Fiberglass Repair Kit", with which I glued the skull back
together, one night over a few refreshments, I think with Bob Applehans
and Van Kaiser, who were Scavenger 8 and 8A at the time, were cheering
me on, and probably Chuck Nole, my brother, but. actually, it may
have been entirely my idea...Anyway, our pilots thought it was a fine
repair job, and were very pleased,. Lighthorse Forever!!
